Design and installation of over 560 motorised Warema External Roller Shutters with bespoke laser cut diamond shaped fascia. The largest external shutter installation in the UK.

Replacing the demolished multi-storey car park for BBC staff, the Macfarlane Place buildings within the Television Centre complex provide 142 new affordable homes in White City.

Located opposite Westfield, the buildings have been designed to offer 34 London Living Rent, 37 Shared Ownership and 71 London Affordable Rent homes.

The Requirement

We were contacted by Kier Construction early on in the development phase to supply over 500 external shutters across both buildings; our first major external shading project and what would be the largest installation of external shutters on one project in the UK.

As the plot is situated on the busy Wood Lane, close to the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines, the shutters were required for both privacy and acoustic control, alongside the mitigation of overheating due to solar heat gain.

Our Solution

As the best products on the market, we immediately put forwards the Warema External Shutter as the optimal solution for the project.

Working closely with Maccreanor Lavington Architects and Kier, we immediately set to work on the design for the systems, paying close attention to the fixing details, which required a specialist fixing within the window frame.

  • External blinds lowered on the top floor windows at TVC

The design also included bespoke laser cut fascia’s in a diamond pattern with an insect mesh screen incorporated within.

Following design sign off, we began a constant stream of communication throughout manufacturing with C&C fabrications, whom we worked with on the fascia, and with our partners Warema for the shutter systems.

The Installation

In total, our team designed and installed over 560 motorised Warema external shutters, all complete with the bespoke fascia’s colour matched for each building.

The installation required great communication with the window contractors to ensure a smooth installation with our specialist fixing and other subcontractors to negotiate tricky access points, particularly when fitting eight storeys up.

Project Manager Lloyd Palmer was incredibly proud to have delivered our first major external shutter project:

It was a privilege working on the Television Centre project. External shading looks set to play a big role in the future of our industry and I’m really proud to have managed such a flagship project. Can’t wait to work on the next one!
